Team Rocket's Best Times

Race Name: St. Catherine's Road Runners Red Dress Run
Location: Niagara On The Lake, Ontario
Date: 12-Aug-06
Distance: 5 km
Time: 0:20:57
Yet another Red Dress Run. Great course, accurately measured and lots of fun costumes. I had flat legs so I didn't know how this was going to go, Two cubbies took off and got ahead of us in the first hundred metres, and I just couldn't let that stand. This was the first 5k in the new buggy. Amanda was not feeling her usual chipper self, so she was glad to go home after. BTW, I hate 5k's.
Race Name: Waterfront Trail Races
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 17-Sep-05
Distance: 8 km
Time: 0:34:37
It's a first for this race... No wind! I run hard and Amanda loves the bumps on the trail we run every Wednesday during the warm weather. We finish 1st AG, 9th OA (Over All). We even set a new PB (Personal Best)!
Race Name: Moon In June
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 10-Jun-06
Distance: 10 km * (very short)
Time: 0:41:45 *
Cool evening for a race. Despite the triathlon training camp on the weekend, I had some legs left. We managed to not only set a Team Rocket PB but it eclipsed my solo PB by 30 seconds. Something tells me that this course is a tad short.

Note: Confirmed - the 10k course was at least 180 metres short. When adjusted for the correct distance, this was still a monster PB with Amanda. I'm still wondering about the exact distance. I'm marking this one with an asterisk.

Race Name: Downtown Dash Races
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 20-Jul-06
Distance: 10 km
Time: 0:43:27
Warm and very humid. It was raining hard in the late afternoon and Amanda's mom didn't want to let us out to play. We went anyway. The rain cleared up just before race time and stayed away. This was the fourth year we've participated and the fourth year we've taken home hardware. We finished 2nd in my AG, one place up from previous years.
Race Name: Whitey's 15k
Location: Waterdown, Ontario
Date: 17-May-03
Distance: 15 km
Time: 1:08:41

Double loop course, lots of hills. I surprised myself at our time. I had just run in the Ottawa marathon six days before. I figured if I ran 1:15 I would be doing well. Amanda really enjoyed the railway bumps (twice) and her hot dog after.

In 2002, she kicked up a big fuss when she saw I was going to this race without her (real tears!) Needless to say, she went racing on her first 15k.

Race Name: Boxing Day 10 Miler
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 26-Dec-08
Distance: 10 miles / 16 km
Time: 1:24:08

For the record, I really don't like this race. Boxing day is usually such a rush-rush day, and I generally want a quiet day after the silliness of Christmas day. This year it was different, quiet even.

I woke up early and stuck my head out the door to find almost perfect conditions. I was feeling fat and slow so I decided to go. Then I asked Amanda if she wanted to race when she got up and that's why we did it. We even managed to get our pictures in the local paper again, but they managed to misspell our names as "Amanda and Mark Collins". There is no "N" in "Collis".

The race itself is a nasty hilly route with about a kilometer along the rail trail that is about half way down the escarpment. Because the rain and mild weather melted most of the snow, the trail was clear.

Race Name: Chilly Half Marathon
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 5-Mar-06
Distance: 13.1 miles
Time: 1:36:49
Perfect weather made for a perfect race. Sunny, above freezing, minimal wind, dry footing and a flat course. Who could ask for anything more. Lots of friends and acquaintances on the route.
Race Name: Around The Bay
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 25-Mar-07
Distance: 30 KM / 18.6 miles
Time: 2:26:56 (clock) / 2:26:30 (chip)

Cool weather, light winds all made for almost perfect conditions for this race. Lots of people were disappointed we were racing rather than being Pace Bunnies.

My race plan worked to perfection and not only did I mange to get Amanda a silver finishers medal, but we set a monster PB for the distance. I only have to trim off 11 more minutes until I can get a silver like Amanda.

Race Name: Niagara Marathon
Location: Buffalo, NY to Niagara Falls ON
Date: 22-Oct-06
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:28:09 (clock) / 3:27:39 (chip) (Boston qualifier)
Note: 30 second head start for wheelchair racers

Marathon #8 - Rain at the start, and again around mile 5. Strong winds off Lake Erie, but nice steady tail wind for the 18 miles along the Niagara Parkway.

Amanda was bundled up like a turkey going into the freezer but she was warm and dry the whole way. She even copped a short nap between mile 12 and 13. She had a few marathoners sing "Happy Birthday" at mile 15, as she turned 21.

Nice steady sub 8 minute mile pace that held until mile 22. Boston qualifying time - Boston Marathon in 2007!

Race Name: Toronto Ultra 35k, 50k & 100k
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Date: 6-May-05
Distance: 50 km
Time: 4:48:04
I opened my big mouth when asked if I'd ever do an ultra with Amanda. I said, "No way... I can't take this buggy on trails." Ultra runner and friend John Turner suggested the 2005 Toronto Ultra and asked the race director. It's a flat loop on paved trails. The day turned out great. The weather cooperated and so did my MP3 player for Great Big Sea tunes that kept Amanda dancing.

Future Races

Race Name: Around The Bay
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 28-Mar-10
Distance: 30 KM / 18.6 miles
Time: Sub 2:40:00 - 2:45:00

Knee problems have hampered my training so far this season. I'll just be running this one to finish. No doubt Amanda will run it for the cheeseburger and fries after.

Race Name: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Location: Boston Marathon
Date: 19-Apr-10
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: sub 4:00

Once more to Boston to play. Not sure, but I have a feeling it will be the last time for a while.

Past Races

Race Name: Chilly Half Marathon
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 07-Mar-2010
Distance: 21.1 KM / 13.1 miles
Time: 1:45:47 (clock) / 1:45:37 (chip)

Once again, I have to thank VRPro Races and race director Kelly Arnott in particular for all the support over the years.

Perfect weather, sunny, warm, with a little bit of a head wind on the last 10 km. Amanda enjoyed the day out, had lots of people cheering her on and maintained her unbeaten streak of finishing just a head of me.

Race Name: Boxing Day 10 Miler
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 26-Dec-08
Distance: 10 miles / 16 km
Time: 1:24:08 (clock) / 1:24:07 (chip)

Race Name: Road2Hope Marathon
Location: Hamilton Ontario, Canada
Date: 3-Nov-08
Distance: 42.2 KM / 26.1 miles
Time: 3:33:35 (clock) / 3:33:28 (chip)

Marathon #12 - Esther Pauls has always been an influence in the local running community with the Runners Den stores, but she's also inspired people to not only raise money but contribute their sweat and work to support a community in the most depressed neibourhood in Cap Haitian, Haiti. Through the efforts of Esther, her volunteers and the funds raised, they have built schools, orphanages and infrastructure. Heck, I even timed the second Haiti 5 km race and donated the fee to the charity.

Amanda and I were honoured to talk at this years pre race dinner. I hope that we inspired people a fraction as much as Esther and Gord Pauls have over the years.

We had a great race, despite not having put the training miles in for the last month that I should have (sinuses). The wind was a factor, especially along the Beach strip and Waterfront Trail section. I'm pretty sure we'd have made our sub 3:30 goal without it.

Race Name: Down Town Dash
Location: Burlington Ontario, Canada
Date: 23-Jul-08
Distance: 10k
Time: 0:44:02 (chip)

It wasn't as hot or humid as it has been in the past, but it was hot enough. We weren't as fast as previous years, but with all the cycling and other training to get ready for the fall IM distance race, I hadn't tapered properly for this one. Amanda still enjoyed the race, but we had to head home shortly after.

My Learn To Run clinic people did great! All of them hit their goals for the day and quite a few of them have signed up for other local races since then. I'm so proud of them.

Race Name: Utica Boilermaker
Location: Utica, New York, USA
Date: 13-Jul-08
Distance: 15k
Time: 1:14:07 (chip)

I ran wearing the Toronto Achilles club singlet, and after the race we were greeted by a fellow Achilles member. We chatted with the legally blind runner and compared notes on the course, the weather and what a great race they put on in Utica. It wasn't until after that some one told me that the runner in question was also the Governor of New York, David Paterson. How cool is that?

Amanda was awake at 5:30 AM laughing and tapping on her wrist, "Is it time to go?" Due to rain we wrapped her legs in a garbage bag and her top in a plastic poncho, but we didn't need it on the race, as it stopped about 10 minutes before the gun. At the party after the race, Amanda had a yogurt and the bag of potato chips in my food bag. Ya gotta replenish those salts and proteins when you are an athelete.

Race Name: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Location: Boston Marathon
Date: 21-Apr-08
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:59:11 (chip)

Marathon #11 - The showers that were predicted late in the week evaporated and left us with almost perfect race conditons.
We didn't run fast, but we did have fun along the way. We got to say hello to lots of people that we had only talked to via email and even a hug or two from friends on the route. Amanda wore her race shirt and medal to her show her friends at the community center she attends. Quite a few of them took turns wearing the finishers medal all day.

I took lots of pictures this and I hope to get a slideshow slapped together of the shots I've taken though the years.

Race Name: Around The Bay
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 30-Mar-08
Distance: 30 KM / 18.6 miles
Time: Sub 2:37:23 (clock) / 2:37:18 (chip)

The weather turned out to be almost perfect. Sunny, dry footing, temperature between 0-4 c, but a bit of a breeze. I'm short on distance and I knew this one was going to be slower than last year. All in all, our time turned out about what I was expecting based on the Chilly half.

Amanda had a great day, her only complaint was the wind in her face going down Woodward Ave. She even responded to a few people when they asked her if she was having a good run, that's unusual. People told me she was smiling the whole way (I can't see, I'm behind). I could tell we had a great day out, smiles all afternoon, eating a big lunch and dinner and asking to go to bed early. It's tough being an athelete.

Race Name: Chilly Half Marathon
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 03-Mar-08
Distance: 21.1 KM / 13.1 miles
Time: 1:44:14 (clock) / 1:44:20 (chip)

Due to weather (snow and cold) and nose surgery I had in December, "The Team" hasn't put in a lot of training. This race was only our second time on the road in 2008. Amanda was so excited about racing that she was asking if it was "time to go" (she taps her wrist) at dinner the night before. Pretty much perfect conditions for this race, a tad cold but sunny and no wind.

Thanks again to Kelly Arnott and VRPro Races for letting us participate.

Race Name: Toronto Waterfront Marathon
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Date: 24-Sep-06
Distance: 42.2 KM / 26.1 miles
Time: 3:32:41 (clock) / 3:30:51 (chip) (Boston qualifier)

Marathon #10 - I was preparing for my first Ironman distance triathlon (solo) in November, so I was treating this race as a training run. I was a bit conserned as I had only gotten in a few 30 km training runs with Amanda prior to this race. Looks like all the cycling made up for the road work.
Amanda had her usual grand time, really enjoying the speed bumps on the Leslie Spit and the cheering people on the run down to the finish line on Front Street.
Of course we had to visit McDonalds after the race for our usual celebratory cheese burger. It's become a tradition.
Race Name: Forest City Marathon
Location: London, Ontario
Date: 14-May-07
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:33:57 (clock) / 3:33:52 (chip) (Boston qualifier)
Marathon #9 - Great weather, pretty much perfect conditions. I didn't know how we were going to run this one. We treated it as a weekend away and planned on just running for fun, with no time pressure. As it turned out, we just ran a nice, steady paced race and left it all on the road during the last 5 km. Amanda just had a great time the whole race, laughing and grinning all the way.
Race Name: Around The Bay
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 25-Mar-07
Distance: 30 KM / 18.6 miles
Time: Sub 2:26:56 (clock) / 2:26:30 (chip)
Cool weather, light winds all made for almost perfect conditions for this race. Lots of people were disappointed we were racing rather than being Pace Bunnies.

Race Name: Chilly Half Marathon
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 04-Mar-07
Distance: 21.1 KM / 13.1 miles
Time: 1:41:11 (clock) / 1:40:59 (chip)
The weather was a little cool and the winds were a factor but not a major one. I just didn't get the training in to run a good race, no excuse. Amanda bit her lip towards the end and was having tummy problems so she wasn't her usual happy self at the end. Oh well, there's always next year.

Race Name: Toronto Waterfront Marathon
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Date: 24-Sep-06
Distance: 42.2 KM / 26.1 miles
Time: 3:39:50
Marathon #7 - Weather reports called for rain all week, but held off on race day. However, the 60kmph gusts and a flat tire put a crimp in our time. Most other runners I know were about 10 minutes slower as well, so I don't feel so bad. Amanda enjoyed her self, as usual.
Race Name: St. Catherine's Road Runners Red Dress Run
Location: Niagara On The Lake, Ontario
Date: 12-Aug-06
Distance: 5 km
Time: 0:20:57
Yet another Red Dress Run. Great course, accurately measured and lots of fun costumes. I had flat legs so I didn't know how this was going to go, Two cubbies took off and got ahead of us in the first hundred metres, and I just couldn't let that stand. Race Name: Moon In June
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 10-Jun-06
Distance: 10 km
Time: 0:41:45 *
Cool evening for a race. Despite the triathlon training camp on the weekend, I had some legs left. We managed to not only set a Team Rocket PB but it eclipsed my solo PB by 30 seconds. Something tells me that this course is a tad short.

Note: Confirmed - the 10k course was at least 180 metres short. When adjusted for the correct distance, this was still a monster PB with Amanda. I'm still wondering about the exact distance. I'm marking this one with an asterisk.

Race Name: Forest City Marathon
Location: London, Ontario
Date: 14-May-06
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:36:37
Marathon #6 - Great weather, hillier than remembered. Sick all week, felt good on race day, no groove. I'm waiting for the finish photo of us smiling butts off.  I tried to run a sub 3:30, but the hills took more out of me than expected and with 5k to go, I knew that I wouldn't run a qualifier. So, rather than miss it by 30 seconds, I backed off and just ran to finish.
Race Name: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Location: Boston Marathon
Date: 17-Apr-06
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:45:09
Marathon #5 - We rode in on the coattails of our Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2004 (it was good for two years) and we had the new racing chair for the race. Perfect weather and good training allowed us to run well and hit our aim time. After the race Amanda said she was ready for a victory lap. I'm already planning on re-qualifying for 2007.
Race Name: Around The Bay 30k
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 26-Mar-06
Distance: 30 km
Time: 2:50:13
This is Amanda's third "Bay" and our second time at as Running Room pace bunnies. We were assigned the 2:50 pace and managed to get pretty close to that time. Amanda as usual had a great time sucking up the sunshine and cheers.
Race Name: Chilly Half Marathon
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 5-Mar-06
Distance: 13.1 miles
Time: 1:36:49
Perfect weather made for a perfect race. Sunny, above freezing, minimal wind, dry footing and a flat course. Who could ask for anything more. Lots of friends and acquaintances on the route.
Race Name: Burlington Jingle-Bell Run
Location: Burlington, Ontario, Canada
Date: 11-Dec-05
Distance: 5 km
Time: 0:30:00 ???
We dress up as Santa and his reindeer and run this one as a fun event. Once again we brought a smile or two to fellow runners and spectators. I'm not sure about our time. We never made the final results... Not that we really care!
Race Name: Hanukah Hustle
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 20-Nov-05
Distance: 10 km
Time: 0:44:15
We received Amanda's new race buggy a month ago and just had the custom seating system installed on the Wednesday. So this is the first race with the new wheels. It's like going from a mountain bike to a top end road bike. Amanda looks far more comfortable and really enjoyed the race. And after being sick for a week or so and not running for over two weeks, we turn a great time and take second in my age category.
Race Name: Toronto Waterfront Marathon
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Date: 26-Sep-05
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:48:52
Marathon #4 - It rained on the way to the race, and threatened rain throughout the race, but we only got a few sprinkles. Very humid and I got nauseous around 20 km and fell off pace. Heat, Tylenol before the race start? No Boston qualifier this year.
Race Name: Waterfront Trail Races
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 17-Sep-05
Distance: 8 km
Time: 0:34:37
It's a first for this race... No wind! I run hard and Amanda loves the bumps on the trail we run every Wednesday during the warm weather. We finish 1st AG, 9th OA (Over All). We even set a new PB (Personal Best)!
Race Name: Downtown Dash
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 21-Jul-05
Distance: 10 km
Time: 0:44:58
Stinking hot and humid. Not as fast as last year, but good enough to finish 3rd in my AG (Age Group) again! We got our photo taken for the local paper just after we finish. I'm suffering from heat fatigue, I'm ready to either pass out or throw up, but I still manage to smile and Amanda laughs at me for the shot.
Race Name: Toronto Ultra 35k, 50k & 100k
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Date: 6-May-05
Distance: 4:48:04
Time: 50 km
I opened my big mouth when asked if I'd ever do an ultra with Amanda. I said, "No way... I can't take this buggy on trails." Ultra runner and friend John Turner suggested the 2005 Toronto Ultra and asked the race director. It's a flat loop on paved trails. The day turned out great. The weather cooperated and so did my MP3 player for Great Big Sea tunes that kept Amanda dancing.
Race Name: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Location: Boston Marathon
Date: 18-Apr-05
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:55:28
Marathon #3 - The Boston Marathon - We get to start with Team Hoyt and finish as champions. Wow. Dream run! It was every thing that I hoped for. From starting behind the wheelchair racers, to running with the Hoyt's, to being passed by the elite women, then the men, it was all worth the time, effort and money to make this race happen.
Race Name: Around The Bay Road Race
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 20-Mar-05
Distance: 30 km
Time: 2:46:10 (Chipped Race)
Tune up long run for Boston. No running hard for this one as I felt it was too close to our big race of the spring. Instead we signed up as the 2:45 Running Room pace bunny. We missed our goal time, but I sent everyone off that could make it earlier and stayed with a group that was struggling over the last four kilometres.
Race Name: Burlington Jingle-Bell Run
Location: Burlington, Ontario, Canada
Date: 05-Dec-04
Distance: 5 km
Time: 0:29:09
We dress up as Santa and his reindeer and run this one as a fun event. We bring along our own music and get costumed and decorated to the hilt. Fun? You bet!
Race Name: Toronto Waterfront Marathon
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Date: 26-Sep-04
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:30:05
Marathon #2 - Team Rocket squeaks in a Boston Qualifying time. We ran smooth average 4:45's kms until I started hurting at around the 28k mark. With the help and support of fellow runners, I managed to get back on track. That last 4 km was the toughest I've ever run. I could feel my 3:30 goal slipping through my hands. I just held tough and fought through the pain and exhaustion. Amanda still beat me through the finish line. Cheeseburger Happy meals to celebrate after!
Race Name: Waterfront Trail 8k
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 18-Sep-04
Distance: 8 km
Time: 0:35:09
Windy and chilly. I went out too fast on first few k's (3:56, 4:06, 4:11) but the first was down hill and the next two were wind assisted. We were wind hindered on the way back and averaged 4:30 k's for the rest of race. Great run, finishing 16th overall and 1st in the 45-49 AG! Amanda really liked the bumps and ate my croissant at the after race breakfast!
Race Name: Red Dress Run
Location: Niagara On The Lake, Ontario
Date: 07-Aug-04
Distance: 5 km
Time: 0:40:46 (21:20*)
We got to the race late, I miss timed how long it would take to get everyone ready and how long it would take to drive there. -sigh-
The race director gave us our number and T-shirts so we had to run the course. We started by ourselves and ran the course solo. Our official time was 0:40:46 but my watch time was 21:20. Amanda likes this course - It's got some good bumpy sections.
Race Name: Downtown Dash
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 22-Jul-04
Distance: 10 km
Time: 0:44:13
Hot and humid. Lots of fun, I run well in the heat and Amanda just likes to go. Stayed focused and no one passed us after the 2k mark. We put the hammer down with 3 k to go and managed to not only set a PB, but we took third in our Age Group.
Race Name: Mississauga Marathon
Location: Mississauga, Ontario
Date: 16-May-04
Distance: 26.2 miles
Time: 3:44:16
Marathon #1 - Team Rocket's first marathon. I was hoping for 3:30-3:40, but it wasn't to be. I ran a great first half, but ran out of steam in the second half. It looks like I'll be doing some serious training with Amanda over the summer.
Race Name: Around The Bay Road Race
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Date: 30-Mar-04
Distance: 30 km
Time: 2:34:53
First race in 2004 with Amanda. Am I nuts? Could be. Amanda was bundled up warm and cozy. I was running this one to finish so I walked the three major hills and ran steady through out. I was extremely happy with the time considering I was figuring on finishing around 2:45.
Race Name: Downtown Dash
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Date: 22-Jul-03
Distance: 10 km
Time: 0:44:09 *(0:44:19)
Hot and humid. Lots of fun, I run well in the heat and Amanda just likes to go. We stayed focused and no one passed us after the 2k mark. We put the hammer down with 3k to go and managed to not only set a PB, but we took third in our Age Group. (Note: With no start mats, our official time was questionable. My watch and the clock both said 44:09 - see the photo!
Race Name: Whitey's 15k
Location: Waterdown, Ontarios
Date: 17-May-03
Distance: 15 km
Time: 1:08:41
Double loop course, lots of hills. I surprised myself at our time. I had just run in the Ottawa marathon six days before. I figured if I ran 1:15 I would be doing well. Amanda really enjoyed the railway bumps (twice) and her hot dog after.
In 2002, she kicked up a big fuss when she saw I was going to this race without her (real tears!) Needless to say, she went racing on her first 15k.
